Drums

Summary of the History of the drums:

At the begining all the percussion instruments were played individually, but after the "English Civil War" all the percussion instruments were played together, in this way the drums were created.

The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments, which is technically classified as the membranophones. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with the player's hand, or with a drumstick, to produce sound. There is usually a "resonance head" on the underside on the drum, these are usually tuned to a sligthtly lower pitch than the top drumhead. Other techniques have been used to cause drums to make sound, such as the thumb roll. Drums are the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years.

A few types of drums such as timpani are always turned to a certain pitch. Often, several drums, other than timpani drums, can be arranged togheter to create a drum kit.

Uses:

Drums are usually played by the hand, or by one or two sticks. In many traditional cultures drums have a symbolic function and are often used on religious ceremonies.
Drums are often used music therapy, especially hand drums, because of their tactile nature and easy use by a wide variety of people.
Within the realm of popular music and jazz, "drums" usually refers to a drum kit or a set of drums (with some cymbals) and "drummer" to the actual band member or person who plays them.
Drums acquired even divine status in places such as Burundi, where the karyenda was a symbol of a power of the king.

Here is a video that show us how to play the drums, but the the man that is going to teach us hoy to play it, isn't an ordinary one: He is the 23rd player in the world, Traver Backer! So if you are interested you can see it.
Pay attention and good luck!

Maná

Mana's story begins in the mid-seventies in Guadalajara, Mexico, thanks to four friends coming together to perform songs from Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. These friends formed a group called 'The Green Hat Spies', which eventually would become 'Green Hat' and finally, in 'green hat' and its translation into Spanish.
As 'green hat' released two albums: 'Green Hat' and 'To the rhythm of rock', with rather poor results in terms of sales. Due to the failure of the group were several changes in band members, who eventually left with the following components: Fernando Olvera (Fher), Alejandro Gonzalez (Alex), and the brothers Juan and Ulises Calleros. Since then decide to change his stage name from that to 'Mana' and use Latin rhythms in his compositions.

In 1987 they published his first album, titled 'Mana', with modest results, and in 1989 the second, 'Lack of love.'
Would be during the next two years as Mana would be released across the country, with over
seventy concerts and several awards and gold records for his work.

In 1992 he edited 'Where children play?', Recorded in a studio in Los Angeles. Ulyses Callero becomes the manager of the group and enter César López (Vampire) and Ivan Gonzalez. The album became a bestseller, not only in Mexico but in most Spanish speaking countries.

In late 1993, Vampire and Ivan leave the group, and enters Sergio Vallin as the fourth member of the band.

In 1995 released a new album 'When Angels Cry', which again becomes an international success. Two years later a new album sees the light: 'Liquid Dreams'. It is published simultaneously in 26 countries, including Spain, where he won the gold in just two months. With this album Maná perform a major tour throughout Latin America, United States, Canada, Spain and an endless number of countries. In 1999 Manna published a new album, 'MTV Unplugged', for that television, and collaborated with Carlos Santana on his latest album.

In 2002 comes to light their seventh studio album Maná, recorded in Los Angeles, entitled 'Love Revolution', a mix of reggae, funk and a touch of Afro-Cuban music. But above all, Rock at its best. The theme of the lyrics reflect deep feelings about love, heartbreak and longing.

The album features the collaboration of Ruben Blades and Carlos Santana, who thus returns to the collaboration visit the group did on the last disk of the master Santana.

In 2006, after a long wait, Maná publishes a new work entitled 'Love is to fight'. The album is produced by Mana with the special collaboration of recording engineer Thom Russo (who has worked alongside major music stars such as Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton, among many others). The album includes an excellent duet with Juan Luis Guerra on "Bless Your Light."

Maná published in 2008 live album "Arde el cielo", recorded during the world tour of "Love is fight." Besides the big hits of his career, the album includes two previously unreleased tracks, "If you had not gone" and "Burn the sky."

In 2011, six years after their last studio recording, Maná publishes 'Drama and light'. Posted on April 12, 2011, this album features 12 new songs Manna, whose first single is titled 'Rain Heart', followed by its corresponding video clip. The full version of 'Drama and light' includes a DVD where the band shows us the making of this album, an album that the band dedicated to the mother and the sister of singer Fher, died in 2010.

Produced by Fher, Alex and Sergio, 'Drama and light' was first recorded in May 2010 between Puerto Vallarta and Los Angeles and its completion took place in the Henson Recording studios in Los Angeles.

The Bass Guitar

The bass is an instrument also played with the fingers or thumb, or by using a pick. It looks like an elecrtic guitar, but with a longer neck and with four, five or six strings. It's usually tuned like a double bass. The bass guitar is a transposing intrument. To play it, you have to plug it to an amplifier and  speaker like the electric guitar.

Since the 1950's, the bass guitar has replaced the double bass in popular music as the bass instrument in the rhythm section.

The bass guitar is used in many styles of music including rock, metal, pop, punk rock, country, reggae, blues, and jazz. It is used as a soloing instrument in jazz, fusion, latin, funk, and in some rock and metal styles.

Uses

Popular Music

Popular music bands and rock groups use the bass guitar as a member of the rhythm section, which provides the chord sequence or "progression" and sets out the "beat" for the song. The rhythm section typically consists of a rhythm guitarist or electric keyboard player, or both, a bass guitarist and a drummer; larger groups may add additional guitarists, keyboardists, or percussionists.

Jazz

The electric bass is a relative newcomer to the world of jazz. The big bands of the 1930s and 1940s used the double bass. The electric bass was introduced during the late 1960s and early 1970s, when rock influences were blended with jazz to create jazz-rock fusion. The introduction of the electric bass in jazz fusion, as in the rock world, enabled the bass to be used in high-volume stadium concerts with powerful amplifiers, because it is much easier to amplify the electric bass than the double bass.

Contemporany classical music

Contemporary classical music uses both the standard instruments of Western Art music (piano, violin, double bass, etc.) and newer instruments or sound producing devices, ranging from electrically amplified instruments to tape players and radios. The electric bass guitar has occasionally been used in contemporary classical music (art music) since the late 1960s.

Jimi Hendrix

James Marshall "JimiHendrix was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is considered to be the best guitarrist in musical history.
Hendrix was introduced in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 1992.
Then, in 2003, the "Rolling Stone Magazine" choosed him as the best guitarrist in the world, and in 2004 they choosed him in the list of the best artists in the world (number 6).
In 2009, "Time", an American magazine, choosed him as the best guitarrist of the electric guitar, getting over artists like
B. B. King, Chuck Berry, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.
He's still having the best "Riff" in the story of the music for his song "Voodoo Child" according to a survey made in 2009, getting over artists like
Derek and The Dominos, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
